Today's Understanding world political problems lecture concluded by the question: who will be the next hegemon (dominating force)? Will it be China, the European Union, or perhaps Walmart? What doesn't surprise me is the fact that Walmart made the list. However, from what I see is that China and European Union cannot be a hegemon. Why you may ask? Here's why:
China may economically/financially be the strongest (this is not a fact, rather a presumption), but with the opening of command economy, I will refer to this as the glasnost formula that Russians used, the gross human rights violations are becoming more apparent in China. For instance, not recognizing Tibet as an independent nation-state; disregarding workplace safety standards, lack of labour laws, exploiting nature for financial gains, and countless others; this is just the jest of it. So with the growing use of information technology, no matter how much China tries to oppress these facts, they will one way or another come forward. The Chinese people are becoming more informed, especially those that come abroad for education, they get access to information which they wouldn't have otherwise. From a personal standpoint, the people of China eventually may rise against the government and end up splitting apart just like the Soviet Union. This is why China is off my list!
European Union, hmmm... haven't these countries ruled enough in colonial times, so now even if it wanted to be the next ruling force, it will miserably fail. Not to forget the extent to which they are stranded in their own financial crises.
So now, if these two are off the list, then what will it be? Africa perhaps or maybe even the climate?
Please comment, I would like to know your input!
